Rain Water Harvesting, Devanahalli

Environment Association of Bangalore (EAB) has built and dedicated a Rain Water Harvesting System (RWH) to Government Girls High School, Devanahalli on Friday, June 26, 2020. A Dedication Ceremony was held in the school.
Smt. Malavika Avinash, lawyer, cinema star, activist and Chairperson, COVID19 Task Force was the Chief Guest. In her speech, Mrs. Avinash mentioned the importance of the toilets with proper water facilities for girl children at the high school level. She
appreciated the efforts of Environment Association of Bangalore in providing such facilities.
Dr. R G Nadadur, President, EAB, in his presidential address explained how the RWH project was started. He said that the project was taken up as a means to slow down the drop out of girl students at the high school level. He also said that this was the second project that EAB had completed, the first one being in Yaliyur. He assured the audience that EAB would strive to provide water facilities in toilets in more Government Schools.
EAB thanked Dr. B. C. Ravishankar, USA, Smt Sujatha Shankar, Pune, Smt Usha Shetty of Gramantara Trust, Bengaluru and Citrix R&D India Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru for their financial support and Dr Vijay and Karnataka State Council for Science and
Technology for their technology support.

Summary of the project
This project envisaged the construction of a sump which can store 30,000 Litres of water, which is harvested during the monsoon, from the terraces of three buildings of the school. The stored rain water is pumped to different overhead tanks, which are used for the purposes of toilets, washing and cleaning. The cost of the project was Rs 3.00 lakhs (approximately). The beneficiaries of this project are 275 girl students and staff of the school, in terms of maintaining better cleanliness, hygiene and health. It is specifically aimed at providing water during the water-scarcity months.
